This course starts the Jazz Minor and provides an intermediate theoretical understanding of jazz harmony, jazz chord symbols, common jazz scales and modes, jazz articulations, blues forms, piano voicings, the basics of tune writing, and techniques in accurately memorizing jazz standards. Online resources include online platform, flash cards, worksheets and 35 instructional videos. This course is recommended for all musicians who would like to further their understanding of commercial music.
Prerequisites: If the director is not familiar with your work, to enroll in Jazz Fundamentals 1 you must take the Jazz Theory Proficiency Exam and/or audition.

This course teaches students how to aurally recognize commercial chords, standard chord progressions and recognize the scales used in improvisation. This course is a hybrid course with only 7 in class meetings. The course utilizes online resources and instructional videos and online aural quizzes and weekly aural skills drills.

Jazz Improvisation

This course is designed to teach musicians the basics of jazz improvisation with regards to the performance and understanding of historical jazz vocabulary, chord = scale relationships, rhythmic interaction within a small group, stylistic concepts of melody interpretation, and the rhythmic invention of scales. Exercises will include performing required scales in a variety of rhythms, performing major and minor ii-V-I jazz vocabulary licks in all twelve keys, performing jazz standards by memory, transcribing and performing an historical jazz solo. You will also develop a Media Portfolio Project so you can submit those materials to get work in the field.

Jazz Chamber Music (combo)

This course will provide small group ensemble performance experience in the jazz idiom. Students will memorize jazz standards, learn melody interpretation techniques, rhythmic techniques to communicate to other members of the ensemble, and small group compositional techniques for harmonizing jazz standards and original compositions. This course contains online quizzes and video quizzes. Students have to perform for four performances that are required as part of the curriculum. This course may be repeated. A passing grade of B or better is required for this course to count towards a Jazz Minor.
Prerequisites: Jazz Fundamentals 1 & 2 online.
Jazz Arranging 1

This course provides instruction in jazz composition and arranging and provides the basic techniques for commercial song writing. Students will study chord movement, melodic development techniques and composition techniques for various styles of music. Students will complete several small group arrangements and original jazz compositions.
Prerequisites: Jazz Fundamentals 2 and Jazz Improvisation with a B or better grade.
Jazz Arranging 2

This course provides instruction in jazz composition and arranging and provides the basic techniques for commercial song writing. Students will score a large group arrangement and a big band chart for 8 brass, 5 saxophones and 4 rhythm section players.
Prerequisites: Jazz Arranging 1 with a B or better.
Advanced Jazz Musicianship

Instruction will cover implementing jazz harmony, chord symbols, jazz scales and modes, jazz articulations, and techniques for accurately memorizing jazz standards. Lessons will focus on implementing these concepts in jazz performances. This course will use the music of the blues, jazz standards, and contemporary music as “play along” tools. This course is a hybrid course with online components and resources. You must audition in the first week of classes for placement to be considered for enrollment. Prerequisites: Jazz Fundamentals 2 with a B or better grade. Must also have the approval of instructor.
